The Challenge

Sandy station on the East Coast Main Line required platform extensions to accommodate 12-car train formations, essential for increasing passenger capacity into London as part of the wider Thameslink programme. The works needed to be delivered over a 12-month period in coordination with commissioning of rail system assets, requiring careful planning and sequencing to maintain operational services. Each platform required a 75-metre extension with full structural, drainage, and safety infrastructure installed to Network Rail standards whilst working in a live railway environment.

What We Did

Aaron Rail was procured by C Spencer Ltd to deliver comprehensive platform extension works. Our core scope included:

  • Platform Foundations – construction of structural foundations to support extended platform infrastructure
  • Installation of PCC Beams and Planks – installation of precast concrete beam and plank platform decking systems
  • Installation of Platform Copings – fitting platform edge copings to provide safe, compliant platform edges
  • Installation of Platform Fencing – installing safety fencing along extended platform areas

In addition to the primary civil engineering scope, Aaron Rail provided flexible support across the wider project, assisting with station lighting installations, track realignment works, and the provision of general civils and safety-critical rail labour to support programme delivery.

The Outcome

  • Both platforms successfully extended by 75 metres to accommodate 12-car trains
  • Enhanced passenger capacity on services into London from the East Coast Main Line
  • Works delivered safely over 52 weeks in coordination with rail system commissioning
  • Platform infrastructure installed to Network Rail standards with full structural integrity
  • Significant milestone achieved in the Thameslink outer platform extension programme

Added Value

This project showcases Aaron Rail’s ability to deliver complex platform extension works as part of major railway upgrade programmes. By providing flexible labour resources and technical expertise beyond the core scope—including support with lighting, track works, and safety-critical activities—our teams helped ensure seamless programme delivery and contributed to transformational capacity improvements on this vital route into London.
